Palace Lanterns have long tradition. It had became popular as early as in the 8th Century. According to the ‘Historical Records’ Emperor T’ang Ming had the Forbidden City decorated with ‘Image Lanterns’ during the Lantern Festival, which was on the 15th day of the first moon of a new year.
Twenty silk light houses, each measuring 75 feet high were built. Jade and jewel were hung on them which sounded off enlightening tone when there was a breeze. The Ming Emperor Ch’u Yu’an Ch’ang had made Nanking the Capital. During the Lantern Festival which is usually held on the mid-January of every calender year.
The River Ch’iu Wei was beautifully decorated by thousands of Lanterns. Besides, an officer was appointed for the making of lanterns and a producing unit was established to gather all the talented craftsmen together. It is obvious that the importance of the Palace Lanterns was never neglected by the Royal Courts since one thousand years earlier.
